Free Slippers Hack!

Hey, hey! I don’t know about y’all, but my holiday gift sewing is in full swing! There are tons of freebies on the site that will make socially distant, handmade gift-giving a little easier this year! Check out some of our many awesome freebies right HERE.

Today we are gonna hack one of our newest freebies, The Sleepy Time Slippers! This amazingly comfy and cozy slipper pattern is available in sizes ranging from Newborn to Adult XXL- so you can make them for the whole fam bam! I am gonna show you how to make those toesies even cozier by adding a quilted, cushioned sole!

For this tutorial you’ll need:

  • The Sleepy Time Slipper pattern. You can grab that HERE.
  • Lining fabric- fleece, sherpa and faux fur are popular choices!
  • Outer sole fabric- nonslip fabrics, suede, and pleather will do!
  • The “cushy” layer- sew in foam or batting.
  • The “stiff” layer- sew in heavyweight interfacing.

Check out a step by step of how I did it and what I learned along the way!

I used a piece of Pellon FF77 1/4″ Flex Foam that I had laying around. No foam? No problem! You could use a few layers of fleece or quilt batting to add a little extra padding. You can also skip the “stiff” layer but I really like the extra stability it gives the sole!

Ok, here’s where I did a little learnin’! The more rows you add to the quilting, the more the foam will compress and the less “cushy” the sole will be. I knew I wasn’t going to do diamonds so I sewed 1/2″ rows. I think on future slippers I would do at least 1″ for kids and 1.5″ for adults.

For the quilting- you’re totally not locked into doing “traditional” quilt styles like diamonds or checks. Get creative with your stitching! I think at some point (when I’m feeling fancy) I might stitch my kids names onto the bottom of their slippers.

After completing your soles, just follow the rest of the tutorial to finish your slippers! I made these slippers to match my daughter’s Foster Pet Pocket Hoodie and and pants from Lola Wardrobe Builder. This is the perfect little set for lounging around the house and snuggling up!

I hope this post inspired you! Happy sewing, y’all!
